Romano has since revealed that the “key details” are being discussed before a full agreement can be reached.
“Arsenal expect Declan Rice deal to be 100% agreed today or tomorrow — the club is working to get it sealed within 24/48 hours. It’s more than close now,” wrote Romano (via Twitter, 28 June).
“All parties discussing key details as the agreement looks imminent.”
Endgame
This feels as if a major breakthrough has been made.
Manchester City pulling out of the race is a major development. Had the Premier League champions matched Arsenal’s mammoth bid, then the decision would have laid firmly at the 24-year-old’s feet.
During this summer-long saga, Arsenal have always been Rice’s preferred destination. Mikel Arteta has worked tirelessly to ensure Rice makes the move to The Emirates and he’s now closing in on his man.
Finally, West Ham United fans are coming to terms with Rice’s exit from the London Stadium. It will be tough seeing him return next season in a red jersey and even tougher to face him.
One positive is that this transfer battle is now coming to an end. David Moyes needs backing in the summer window and if a big lump sum arrives, the overall make-up of West Ham’s squad could improve.
With Tim Steidten set to arrive, a big summer of recruitment could well be in the offing at the London Stadium.
