Eddie Howe has moved quickly to add to his squad ahead of their return to the Champions League.
The Magpies head coach has seemingly made it clear that his priority is to strengthen in midfield and Tonali has emerged as a key target in recent days.
The Italy international has played 130 times for AC Milan over the past three seasons and he helped them win Serie A in 2021/22.
Newcastle’s talks with AC Milan over Tonali have progressed quickly and Romano took to Twitter on Friday to reveal: “They will complete Sandro Tonali deal today after verbal agreement reached yesterday.
“Medical already scheduled and agents flying to Romania where he’s with Italy U21 for the Euros. #NUFC Documents being reviewed then deal completed.”
Romano has now given this transfer the “here we go” treatment. He has stated that an “agreement” has been reached over a €70m transfer “with add-ons”.
The transfer expert has indicated that AC Milan “will have a sell-on clause” and documents are now “being prepared”. He adds.
“Tonali will sign a contract until 2029 for €7m per year and €2m add-ons. It’s a record sale ever for an Italian player.
“Sandro Tonali deal is completed but will not be announced today or this week as it takes time to complete formal details.
“All documents are in place, the deal is done and sealed. No doubts. The contract will be valid for 6 years.
Newcastle moved for Tonali after their interest in Inter Milan’s Nicolo Barella was revealed. Last week, they were said to be ‘closing in’ on the Champions League finalist but this reported £50m move now looks to be off the table.
Barella has reportedly ‘politely’ said no to a move to Newcastle and this is leaving Man Utd and Liverpool to battle for his signature.
“What I can tell you is that, for sure, there is interest from Newcastle and for sure Eddie Howe is a big fan of Nicolo Barella, they would love to sign Barella,” Romano said.
“But they also know that at the moment for Inter £50m is absolutely not enough to sell Barella. They extended his contract, it was a few months ago.
