'I'm going to stay': £46m ace rules out joining Arsenal or Newcastle

In the 88th minute of Wednesday’s thrilling pre-season friendly clash between Arsenal and Barcelona in Los Angeles, Xavi Hernandez’s Spain international scored a consolation goal for his current employers against a club some have labelled his ‘future’ employers.

Ferran Torres, per 90Min, is the latest in a long line of former Man City players on the radar of Pep Guardiola’s old assistant, Mikel Arteta. The Daily Mail say that Newcastle are also keen on a versatile, highly-technical forward who plundered a 22-minute hat-trick against them back in May 2021.

City sold the former Valencia whizzkid to Barcelona in a £46 million deal 18 months ago. But despite struggling for starts in Catalonia – and despite the prospect of kick-starting his career again at one of the Premier League’s most ambitious and upwardly-mobile teams – Torres is hoping that late strike vs the Gunners in the ‘City that Never Sleeps’ can act as a new beginning for him at the Camp Nou.

Ferran Torres to snub Premier League return
“It’s very important for a striker to start scoring, to get off to a good start. I’m going to fight for a place in the team. And then it is up to the coach to decide (my future),” Torres tells Sport.

“The names (linked with moves away) are provided by journalists. I have a contract here. I’m going to stay. I don’t care what anyone says about me.

“I’m going to work as hard as anyone else.”

Aston Villa have also been mentioned as a potential destination for Torres.

Even if Torres was open to leaving the La Liga champions, a move to Villa Park would seem unlikely in the extreme after Aston Villa shattered their transfer record to bring in the similarly flexible, equally-jet-heeled Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen.

Villa did, however, miss out on Manor Solomon to Tottenham Hotspur.

“In addition to Tottenham, Aston Villa, West Ham, and RB Leipzig wanted him,” says Solomon’s agent.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have brought in Harvey Barnes from relegated Leicester City.
