Mikel Arteta told Arsenal star 'too good to be on the bench' as transfer rumours circle

Former Scotland international Kenny Miller has told Mikel Arteta that Kieran Tierney is ‘too good’ to not be a regular starter at Arsenal.

Tierney found his minutes limited last season following Oleksandr Zinchenko’s arrival at the Emirates last summer.

The 26-year-old started just six Premier League games last season with him firmly behind the Ukrainian in Arteta’s plans, seeing the former Celtic man linked with an exit.

Due to his lack of minutes in North London, Tierney has been most prominently linked with Newcastle United and Aston Villa, with both teams offering European football this season.

And Miller now believes it’s the right moment for him to call time on his stay at Arsenal with him too good to sit on the bench for Arteta, Miller said: "I think he probably needs to now.

"When he plays, he's a world class left-back. To play regular football, he probably needs to step away from Arsenal."When you're playing week in, week out, there's maybe just a different edge to your game. I think there's potentially more in him from what we've seen.

"He's one of our best players. A move to Newcastle with everything that's going on at that place at the moment would be a really big step.

"Champions League football as well, so he's not going to be stepping away from that level.""There will be lots and lots of teams that will take it. He'll have loads of potential suitors. If he moves, he'll have a number of options. If he's not going to be getting a game, he's too good to sitting as part of a squad."

Although his performances for Scotland are yet to be affected by the lack of minutes according to Miller, with him starting both of his nation’s Euro qualifiers in June, he still believes the defender can kick on with a potential move to Newcastle mooted.

Miller continued: "It doesn't seem to affect his performances at an international level.
