Arsenal receive big transfer boost to help them offload surplus defender

Arsenal are still looking to move on from players unwanted by Mikel Arteta. As The Top Flight has covered already, Nuno Tavares is seen as a surplus player at Arsenal, with Premier League teams vying for the defender.

Nottingham Forest looked to be interested in signing Tavares, but their priorities now lay elsewhere. With Aston Villa now in the mix to sign Tavares, it is now a situation to watch, given it will bring additional funds to Arsenal. Aston Villa’s own transfer dealings could now have a direct effect on the departure of Nuno Tavares from the Emirates.

Aston Villa’s Lucas Digne transfer away could accelerate Tavares’ talks with Arsenal
Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Ligue 1 side OGC Nice is advancing in talks with Aston Villa to sign fullback Lucas Digne. The Frenchman will likely leave on loan for the season with an option to buy next summer. Digne’s departure from Villa Park should put in motion the wheels for Aston Villa to move for Nuno Tavares. Villa’s Alex Moreno is expected to return from injury sometime soon, but it could still be a while till he returns to full fitness.

Aston Villa seemingly has laid out two very different fullback options in Nuno Tavares and Marcos Acuna. The Arsenal defender is a much younger option and more offensive-minded.

Arsenal have their own full-back situation to deal with after the injury of Jurrien Timber. Kieran Tierney is also expected to leave Arsenal this summer, but it is not clear of it that has changed since Timber’s injury. Oleksandr Zinchenko has returned to the Gunners squad and will likely start over Takehiro Tomiyasu once he is fully fit. Clearly, given the logjam at the left-back position, Nuno Tavares has found himself as a surplus defender under Mikel Arteta. It is yet to be reported on what sort of fee the club may ask for Tavares.
