The Gunners launched a surprise challenge for the title last term, leading the table for the majority of the campaign, ultimately finishing five points behind Manchester City. Refusing to rest on their laurels, Arsenal have doubled down on their title ambitions by bringing Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and Declan Rice through the door.
Man City won the treble last season but have not significantly strengthened, despite losing both Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan, while Arsenal sent an early warning shot to their rivals with victory in the Community Shield. Asked whether Arteta’s side are capable of going a step further, Gary Neville issued his shock prediction, backing Arsenal to finish in top spot.
“I am going to go for Arsenal to win the league,” Neville told The Overlap in partnership with Sky Bet. “I’m going for Manchester City second, then Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Aston Villa.”
The Sky Sports pundit was conflicted about his title prediction but picked Arsenal to win the league for the first time in 20 years, pointing out that no club has ever won four Premier League titles in a row. Neville believes that the Gunners have recruited well and can see Arsenal leading the charge to threaten Man City’s dominance.
“I don’t think Arsenal could’ve done any more to close the gap [to Manchester City],” he continued. “They’ve shown real intent with the signings that they’ve made – my concern is that I look at and think they actually could win the league. They obviously fell short last season, but with the signings they’ve made I think they’re going to be better.”
Meanwhile, fellow pundit Jamie Carragher believes Pep Guardiola’s side will claim the league title, once again. However, the Liverpool legend was quick to call out a “myth” surrounding Man City’s strength in depth, which could potentially derail their hopes of retaining the Premier League.
“I’m going for Manchester City, then Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham,” Carragher said.“When I looked at City in the Shield as well, there’s been a myth around them that they have a massive squad – they’ve never had a massive squad, always 15 or 16 players who are top class. They always have a few kids on the bench as well. If they have a few injuries, how would they cope with that?
“Arsenal look a lot stronger, as do Chelsea and Liverpool. But – it’s Pep Guardiola, he’s set the bar that high, and his teams never really get lower than 90 points. It’s a big ask for anyone.
