In the two games Kai Havertz has played, he has been used in a number nine role, as well as being deployed as a number eight, with Wright backing him to play much deeper in midfield, as he told Premier League Productions (14/08/23 at 2:20 pm).
Given that Havertz was part of a Chelsea team that finished in the bottom-half last season, then he’s not exactly jumping with joy or full of confidence in regards to his performances.
In order to ease the situation, it does seem as though he needs to find the back of the net as quickly as possible, just so he can shut a few people up.
But, of course, he’s not there just for the goals, but to control games, allow pockets of spaces to open up for teammates, carry that ball forward from deep and play at a high level in a number of positions, with Wright bigging him up.
Kai Havertz
“I have seen that we have played him up front and we have played him back into the midfield,” said Wright.
“I believe that somebody like Kai Havertz, you mention Thomas Partey, you can have two number eights. You can have Kai Havertz as one if you want or Declan Rice.
“You can play him a little deeper or you can play him in that little bit advanced role. Obviously, we don’t need him as a number nine.
“But I know that he is somebody that, if he can crash the box, then I believe he will cause a lot of problems for teams.”

Havertz will come good
Not a single player in Chelsea colours, probably apart from Thiago Silva, can hold their head up high and be proud of their performances last season.
Yes, Havertz was an issue and he struggled, but so did 20 other players.
The German international is in a very different environment now, one that is pushing for the Premier League title, understands his game better and is far more stable than his previous club.
