Arsenal, however, are not done just yet. Dean Jones has claimed on GiveMeSport that Mikel Arteta is still keen to sign Luiz, but that move is unlikely to happen in this window.
It’s an ‘open secret’ that Arsenal want to sign Douglas Luiz
Arsenal have wanted to sign Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa for a while.
The Gunners pushed really hard to get him 12 months ago, with bids going in even on transfer deadline day. Villa, however, retained his services and handed him a brand new contract.
Arsenal have moved on since. They signed Jorginho in January this year and brought in one of the best midfielders in the Premier League last month – Rice.
On paper, Arsenal don’t really need someone like Luiz, but Jones says there is still interest.
He said: “I think it’s an open secret in football that Arsenal still want Douglas Luiz, but they have failed to sign him in the past and given that Aston Villa are in a better place now than they were in 2022, I would expect them to keep hold of him again.
“It would take a huge offer to change their stance on that and while I do actually think this would be a great style of player for Arsenal to sign, I’m not convinced they have the capability in this window to make an offer that is so strong that Aston Villa can not turn it down.”Douglas Luiz is a very good player, and it was understandable why Arsenal were interested in him last year.
The Brazilian is great on the ball, very good off it, and he has shown over the years that he’s capable of scoring some spectacular goals as well.
Arsenal could’ve done with him last season, but we just can’t see the Gunners making a move to sign the Brazilian in the coming weeks.
That, however, could change next year, if Thomas Partey, Mohamed Elneny, Jorginho and Albert Sambi Lokonga all end up leaving on permanent deals.
