“As far as I’m aware, there was interest from Chelsea. There was never a bid or anything like that. There was just a conversation to gauge whether Arsenal would potentially be interested in it. And I was told that Arsenal made it clear that they were not interested in doing anything.”
Chelsea now appear to have turned their attention to Manchester City’s Cole Palmer.
The Guardian recently reported that the Blues have had a £35m bid for the winger turned down by their Premier League rivals.
Arsenal have made the right decision
Smith Rowe may not be playing for Arsenal right now, but he is still a great asset to the north London club.
Before his injury problems, the 23-year-old showed that he can score goals, netting 10 times in 33 appearances back in the 2021/22 Premier League season.
He can be a good alternative to the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz. In fact, if he can get back into the Arsenal team and reproduce the form he showed over a year ago, perhaps the £57,000-a-week (Salary Sport) England international could become more than that.
For now, though, Mikel Arteta looks to have settled on his midfield and attack, so it may be a while before Smith Rowe actually gets a run in the team.
It could have easily been a similar theme at Chelsea, though, with the Blues also having quite a few attacking options.Right now, for example, the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke are not even starting games, while Christopher Nkunku will not be unavailable forever.
Smith Rowe probably has too much quality to sit on Arsenal’s bench every season. But maybe staying at the Emirates a bit longer instead of joining Chelsea is the logical decision.
