Few could have really expected to see Arsenal go and invest considerable money in a new goalkeeper this summer.
Aaron Ramsdale was Arsenal’s undoubted number one last season with Matt Turner coming in as his backup from Major League Soccer.
That seemed like a settled setup for Arsenal and yet the Gunners are now plotting changes.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Turner is on the verge of signing for Nottingham Forest having undergone a medical on Monday.
Romano added that Arsenal are ‘increasingly confident’ that they will be signing Brentford goalkeeper David Raya to replace him.
The Spaniard has been on Arsenal’s wish list for years now and it looks like he will be signing for the Gunners very soon.
Gary Neville reacts to Arsenal’s David Raya pursuit
Some have questioned this move, believing that Arsenal’s decision to spend a decent fee on another goalkeeper I strange.
That certainly isn’t the stance of pundit Gary Neville though, who wasn’t completely sold on Arsenal last season.
Gunners supporters hammered Neville last season but may well like to see his verdict on the Raya move.
Speaking on The Overlap, Neville admitted that the push to sign Raya ‘actually really impressed’ him having learned about it just a few days ago.Neville believes that Ramsdale did struggle towards the end of last season as Arsenal’s title hopes fell apart.
Neville has already liked Raya at Brentford but also loves the bigger picture being put forward by Mikel Arteta this summer.
The former Manchester United defender believes Arteta is sending a message that Arsenal’s title hopes collapsing are not being taken lightly and the Gunners will now push to go one better.
“That actually really impressed me the other day,” said Neville. “I thought Ramsdale did struggle a little bit in the last five or ten games, I actually like Raya at Brentford so I thought the idea of signing him was again, another sort of message that he’s not taking what happened last season lightly,” he added.
