It has been a tough time for the 24-year-old following his transfer to Arsenal from Chelsea because he has taken a lot of verbal hits with people telling him that he simply isn’t good enough.
That includes former Aston Villa striker Agbonlahor, who claimed that Kai Havertz will prove to be a ‘flop’ this season.
He also thinks that Leandro Trossard and Emile Smith Rowe will be banging on Mikel Arteta’s door to drop the versatile player, so they can start, as he told talkSPORT (24/08/23 at 9:30 am).
Havertz has started all three games for Arsenal since his summer move, including playing as a number nine during the Community Shield win over Manchester City.
But Agbonlahor doesn’t think Havertz will prove to be a success once the final ball of the 2023/24 campaign is kicked.
“The worst (signing), where do you start,” said Agbonlahor. “The thing for me, and the reason why I am going to choose this player, is last season he was poor.
“Havertz, at £65 million, I want a player who will boss a game. I want a player who will look like he will score goals. When I watch him last season, he gets in people’s way. He literally finds it harder for his teammates to find space. He isn’t quick, not a prolific finisher and he isn’t really great at getting on the ball and turning.
“If I am Smith Rowe, if I am other players in that Arsneal side, like Trossard, I am saying ‘Gaffa, come on, I know you paid £65 million, come on, you have to give me a chance now’.
“So, I think Havertz will be one of the flops of the season.”Arteta needs to be trusted
The Arsenal boss has made a number of big calls during his tenure at the Emirates, including booting out Mesut Ozil and signing Aaron Ramsdale after he had suffered back-to-back relegations.
At the time, these calls, amongst many more, such as the capture of Ben White and the axing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, have all been questioned.
Yet, when the dust has settled, he has been proven right and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the same happens again.
