Spurs are in the market for a new attack-minded player following Harry Kane’s move to Bayern Munich and they are being linked with several potential recruits.
Tottenham are known to be interested in Forest standout Johnson after he grabbed eight goals and three assists for Steve Cooper’s side as they managed to retain their Premier League status.
Earlier this week, it was claimed that Spurs are ‘close’ to an agreement for Johnson, who has also been monitored by Chelsea, Brentford and Aston Villa this summer.
But The Independent are reporting that ‘the fee has been the major stumbling block with Johnson’.
Tottenham are currently ‘way off Forest’s valuation’ for Johnson which is said to have been set at ‘£40m at least’. Those ‘close to the situation have also expressed doubt over whether Daniel Levy and Evangelos Marianakis can come to a deal’.
This has left Spurs looking at alternative targets and Eze is being ‘strongly considered’ amid his recent superb performances for Crystal Palace.
The 25-year-old grabbed ten goals and four assists in the Premier League last season to help Roy Hodgson’s side enjoy a brilliant end to the campaign.
Eze has been linked with several Premier League clubs this summer, with it claimed last month that Arsenal and Manchester United are both monitoring his situation.
The Independent‘s report adds: ‘While Eze is strongly considered, Palace would likely want a far bigger fee than £40m and potentially well over £60m so he is probably out of the club’s price range.Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou wants to bring in another wide forward, and potentially a full-back.’
Earlier this week, Spurs were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Fulham and Postecoglou explained post-match that his team are currently “at the discovery stage”.
“It is my priority (the cups) but there is no European football so how am I going to find out about our players? What opportunity would I have to do that other than the game? They are all part of our club,” Postecoglou said.
“We thought they’d be able to bring a different energy tonight and that doesn’t mean the cup or any game isn’t our priority.
“From my perspective, we’re very much at the discovery stage so we need to find out and give the players the opportunity to contribute, because that’s why they’re here.
“They’re not just here to make up the numbers. They keep working hard and deserved the opportunity to go out and play tonight.”
