The 25-year-old is currently on international duty with Argentina, and played the full 90 minutes of the nation’s 1-0 win over Ecuador on Saturday. He returned from injury in style last weekend, marking his return to the Atletico starting line-up with a goal in the 7-0 away win against Rayo Vallecano.
Molina has caught the eye with his performances on both the domestic and international stage, so much so that Atletico are keen to extend his deal with the club. The right-back’s current contract runs until 2027.
The full-back’s current deal is also said to have a release clause, although there are differing reports over how much the clause is worth. As relayed by OK Fichajes , there are reports claiming that the clause is already €90 million (£77 million), that of course could rise if the player signs a new deal.
It is said that the Spanish club ‘intend’ to offer an extension until 2029 in order to fight off interest from Premier League clubs ahead of the January transfer window. Villa are named among the three clubs ‘after’ the player, alongside title chasers Manchester City and Arsenal. It is added that ‘possible offers’ from the trip ‘is an option that has not been ruled out’.
Molina was a key player in the Argentina team who lifted the World Cup in Qatar back in December. He featured in all seven games during the tournament, starting six of them. He was also on the scoresheet in the quarter-final win over the Netherlands, with Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez the hero in the penalty shootout victory at that stage of the competition.
