Winger Reiss Nelson broke the deadlock after just eight minutes when Eddie Nketiah pounced on a poor back-pass by Mathias Jørgensen and cut it back into the middle of the penalty area where it was calmly slotted home by Nelson. Arsenal shot-stopper Aaron Ramsdale then came up with multiple big saves in the second half to deny Yoane Wissa an equaliser.
Late on, it was defender Jakub Kiwior that received the plaudits from his teammates when he made a vital goalline clearance after Ramsdale had been beaten by a low-driven Lewis Potter effort at his far post. With the win, Arsenal will now have to travel across the capital at the end of October when they face West Ham at the London Stadium for a place in the quarter-finals.The result saw them mark their continued unbeaten run in all competitions so far this season, with Mikel Arteta's side having won each of their three away matches through the campaign. While they challenged for the title right up until the final few weeks, it was their away form in those last few games that ended up being the difference between them and eventual champions Manchester City.
Arsenal would take just one win in their last five away matches, dropping 10 points away from home to Liverpool, West Ham, Nottingham Forest and Man City themselves in a brutal 4-1 defeat. But the Gunners have clearly put that behind them with this new campaign underway, with Arteta delighted with how they've started away from the Emirates Stadium this year.
"Yeah and they were different games, but the outcome was the same," he explained after the Brentford clash. "We are really happy that we can produce clean sheets. Especially away from home which is something we’ve struggled with historically to understand a lot what happened.
"We’re gonna need that. We play three games away in eight days. It’s gonna be crucial to maintain that momentum and that feeling going to the next which is Bournemouth and it’s going to be a really tough match."
Following the game, Odegaard and the rest of the players came over to the away end and clapped the travelling fans. The captain was spotted stood next to Mohamed Elneny who began to turn back away from the cheering supporters.
