Mikel Arteta sent Leandro Trossard message as Arsenal face £82m question

Arsenal star Leandro Trossard could be set to play a new role under Mikel Arteta after the international break. The Belgian forward was deployed as a No.8 in the 1-0 win against Azerbaijan on Saturday afternoon which may be bad news for Kai Havertz and Emile Smith Rowe moving forward.

Trossard's versatility is a huge asset for the Gunners - especially in a season which sees the return of Champions League football, adding to the fixture congestion Arteta must deal with. Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber, David Raya and Havertz all joined Arsenal this summer to add to the squad depth at the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta has already hinted that players that have not featured as much as expected in the opening four Premier League fixtures of the season will be given a chance as the season progresses towards the festive period. Havertz's position as a starter in midfield could be at risk with the likes of Fabio Vieira and Trossard putting in strong cameo performances off the bench.

Smith Rowe will be hoping to force his way into the starting XI, but his future remains uncertain after Chelsea had an enquiry to sign the Hale End graduate rejected during the summer transfer window. Havertz was signed for a huge £65million fee from Chelsea, but he is yet to register a goal or an assist so far this term.

Smith Rowe was a key figure for Arteta a few years ago, but has since dropped down the pecking order after injury problems and new additions to the squad. The England international is valued at £17million - as per CIES Football Observatory - leaving the Gunners with a huge £82million question mark in Arteta's squad.

Vieira has two assists off the bench this season, whilst Trossard score a crucial goal in the FA Community Shield win against Manchester City ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

The Belgium international has mainly been used in the three-man attack by Arteta, but was deployed as a No.8 in pre-season.Trossard was played in midfield for Belgium during the international break and the Arsenal boss may be inclined to use him there more frequently with Havertz struggling to perform at present. There has been plenty of criticism towards the Germany international since his arrival at the Emirates Stadium, but Arteta has repeatedly defender the 24-year-old after his big-money move in the summer.

Smith Rowe may consider his future next summer if he does not start more games in the coming weeks with Arteta seemingly already having ready-made replacements in Vieira and Trossard.
