Ten Hag explains Wan-Bissaka benching, and wanted McTominay v Arsenal

Erik ten Hag has made two shock decisions in his team selection for Manchester United’s game against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has looked superb at the start of this season, is missing out with Sergio Reguilon set to make his debut.

As well as this, Scottish midfielder Scott McTominay has been selected to start for the Red Devils in what is his first start of the new Premier League season.

The midfielder, who looked set to depart the club in the summer, has been brought into the starting eleven in what has caused a few questions amongst the United faithful.

McTominay could well lineup in a midfield diamond with Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes starting, too. Fernandes, however, could well be starting out wide again, we will have to wait and see.

The absence of Wan-Bissaka and the inclusion of McTominay has been explained by Ten Hag.

Wan-Bissaka absence
There was some confusion about why the English right-back has been left out but Ten Hag has clarified the situation around the former Crystal Palace right-back.

Speaking to MUTV before the game, the former Ajax boss confirmed that Wan-Bissaka was ill during the week and is not 100% fully fit, hence his demotion to the bench today.Reguilon, who joined United on deadline day from Tottenham Hotspur, makes his first start for the Red Devils with Diogo Dalot, who was superb against Arsenal, moving to right-back and will have to perform superbly again if he is to keep Kaoru Mitoma quiet.

McTominay inclusion
Ten Hag, in his pre-match interview before the game against Roberto De Zerbi’s side, has explained his thinking behind the inclusion of the Scotsman.

The Dutchman said: “We will be playing slightly different. We already trained with it before Arsenal, but Scott McTominay dropped out before that game.”

So it seems McTominay was in line to start that game but it seems an injury or an illness stopped the midfielder coming into the side.
