Arsenal handed Pedro Neto transfer boost amid Wolves financial worry

Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Pedro Neto was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal during the summer transfer window, although a move failed to materialise before the window slammed shut. But that hasn't stopped speculation, with transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reporting that interested clubs could make a move for the Portugal international next year.

Now, journalist Tim Spiers has claimed that Wolves' ongoing financial struggles could result in Gary O'Neil's side being forced to sell Neto if a big offer were to come in. "Wolves had this huge financial issue in the summer and they had to ship out £100million worth of players and they did spend a bit too (on new players)," Spiers told The Athletic Totally Football Show.

"From what I am told they aren't completely out the woods on that front (FFP), so if Arsenal or a huge club come in with a huge bid for Neto they would have to look at it pretty closely. He is a player destined for a Champions League club and Wolves' financial position perhaps means that will be sooner rather than later."

Neto has enjoyed a hugely successful start to the 2023/24 campaign, leading the Premier League assist charts having already set up seven goals for his teammates in the first 10 matches of the season. But Wolves O'Neil has remained adamant that the 23-year-old has a long-term future at Molineux.

"He's been incredible, Jamie [Carragher]," the former Bournemouth head coach told Sky Sports last week. "And not just - he has massive quality as you can see [here in the win against Manchester City] and you see every week; the way he trains and the way he's been buying into everything I've asked of him in possession, out of possession; the way he drives to improve, the way he sets standards.

"He's been incredible." The ex-Bournemouth manager also remained coy when asked about Neto's future with Wolves, claiming that the talented wideman is happy at Molineux.

"He's incredibly happy at Wolves," O'Neil added. "He's enjoying his football, he's rediscovered some fantastic form.

"He'd had a tough couple of years with injury and form, and he's performing at his best. So he's incredibly settled, happy at the club, and we're going to try and help him achieve some big things while he's here."
