The Netherlands recorded a 1-0 win in Greece, with Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk stepping up and scoring the spot-kick to hand his side a much-needed three points in their quest to qualify for Euro 2024.
After the game, Virgil van Dijk took to Instagram to state that his side have ‘put ourselves in the driving seat’.
The £220k-a-week Liverpool star (Spotrac) isn’t wrong because those three points resulted in the Dutch moving into second place in Group B and overtaking Greece.
Nonetheless, in the comments section of Virgil van Dijk’s IG post, Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber reacted with one word as he posted ‘big’.
The former Ajax star has to watch his country try to qualify for Euro 2024 from afar after suffering an ACL injury on the opening week of the Premier League season, but he will be hoping he could possibly make it back in time and earn his golden ticket to Germany next summer.Boost for Van Dijk
It has been a mixed start to the season for van Dijk, who was at fault for Brighton opening the scoring last week, just like he was against Bournemouth earlier on in the campaign.
Added to that, he was also sent off against Newcastle United in that epic comeback at St James’ Park, with one club legend worried that he will never find his old form again.
Either way, Liverpool fans will be hoping this has provided their captain with a much-needed boost that he will now be looking to transcend onto the Premier League stage.
