Edu’s mysterious scouting trip to Brazil sees Arsenal consider midfield starlet

So often we begin to hear of names popping up in the lead-up to the January transfer window. With the penultimate international break before the end of the year, it is therefore unsurprising to see players peppering our feeds. However, an intriguing trip to Brazil by Arsenal sporting director Edu Gaspar is perhaps a little surprise we did not expect.

The trip has drawn little attention overall but considering football.london understands that work into South American scouting by Arsenal has taken an increased emphasis in the last couple of years it should have more emphasis on it.

"We had contact with Arsenal last year when they welcomed us on our Under-16 trip to England”, said Fluminense’s CT Vale das Laranjeiras executive director, Antônio Garcia. “Today, they came to get to know our CT and our work more closely. They were very impressed and praised our processes.

Edu has helped to recruit top talent for the Gunners, helping manager Mikel Arteta exercise his process and strategy. It was clear when hearing from the Brazilian that his country's influence continues to be a key focus in his work.

"I really liked everything presented to us here. It's an impressive piece of work. The atmosphere at CT de Xerém is different,” Edu told the Fluminense website.

He forms the heart of the Fluminense midfield and is a critical component of build-up play. His dynamism is appreciated in possession but out of it he succeeds too and records high success rates in defensive actions and plays in an aggressive style aiming to win the ball back quickly which feeds well into Arteta’s philosophy.

The understanding of those who watch Andre on a more regular occasion is he has reached a level where a move to Europe is almost an inevitability. The question will be whether it is indeed Arsenal that emerges as the club to try and sign him.

With the improving relationship between the Gunners and Fluminense in the wake of Edu’s visit to the club there is perhaps in increased hope of success. With Thomas Partey, Jorginho and Mohamed Elneny all in the twilight years of their careers perhaps a move for Andre is indeed needed and soon.
