Timber came through the ranks at Ajax playing for their youth team which plays in the second tier of Dutch football. In 2019 he made his big breakthrough and became an ever-present name in the lineup that would go on to continually win league titles year after year.
There had been links with a move to Manchester United, where the versatile youngster could reunite with Erik ten Hag, but that wasn't to be. Instead, he made the move south of England to London as Arsenal lodged a £38million bid that was eventually accepted.
“We’re really excited that Jurrien has joined us," Mikel Arteta said as part of his arrival. "He is a versatile young defender, who will fit into our system and provide our squad with so much added quality. Jurrien is a young player, but has already achieved so much.
"He has experienced what it’s like to go to a major international tournament on more than one occasion, as well as the trophies he has won with Ajax. We look forward to welcoming and integrating Jurrien into the squad.”
That versatility was on show early on, having started at right-back, centre-back and left-back in a few friendlies and then the opening day clash against Nottingham Forest. There would be a huge blow though as an injury concern was later revealed to be an Anterior Cruciate Ligament tear, a part of the knee that requires around six-to-nine-months of recovery at best.

It came as a huge blow, but for many back in the Netherlands and at Ajax, it is clear that the move to Arsenal has still be one of much glamour. That was displayed by Ajax youngster Jorrel Hato, who has admitted that he would like to follow the same pathway as Timber in the future.Speaking to ELF Voetbal, he said: "Unfortunately, he was seriously injured in his first Premier League game for Arsenal, but he is still young and has a bright future ahead of him. In any case, the move to Arsenal was a wonderful one for him. It is also my dream to one day make such a transfer, but I realise that I still have a very long way to go.”
It remains to be seen if Hato will reach the heights to one day secure a move to Arsenal or even elsewhere at the very top level, but it's showing that the Gunners are an attractive place to move once more.
