Shearer makes Arsenal transfer priority clear as Arteta sent £45m warning

Alan Shearer has criticised Gabriel Jesus for "consistently" missing chances in a clear Arsenal message to Mikel Arteta and Edu. The Brazil international was signed by the Gunners in 2022 from Manchester City with the arrival of the versatile forward and Oleksandr Zinchenko from Etihad Stadium placing Arsenal on the brink of Premier League title glory.

However, the Gunners came up short with Man City overturning an eight-point deficit to win their third consecutive title. Jesus has been plagued by a knee injury for a large portion of his spell in north London with the 26-year-old missing three months in the 2022/23 campaign.

Despite this significant lay-off, Jesus still scored 11 goals from 26 Premier League appearances, however he has been criticised by Shearer, who holds the Premier League goal record, for missing multiple opportunities at goal with a particular miss earlier this season highlighted.

“Jesus does really well to anticipate the pass and nabs the ball from James Maddison’s toes,” he told The Athletic, via The Boot Room, when explaining a key moment from last month's North London Derby. "It leaves him in an ideal position in the middle of the goal, with space around him and the choice of aiming either side. He goes with the option of hitting his shot with the front of his foot, which is fine; it’s something I used to do a lot of the time.

“But this is another example of leaning back for a shot; Jesus’ body and technique are all wrong. Without wishing to pick on him, he has consistently been underperforming his xG over the past few years, which tells you he’s getting into good positions and isn’t finishing them. Exhibit A right here.”As Shearer points out, Jesus is not scoring as many goals as he should be and as Arsenal's talisman that is hard to ignore considering they are pushing to win this season's Premier League title. With that in mind, Arteta and Edu should use Shearer's comments as a clear transfer message that their next priority signing should be a striker.
