The centre-back, who left Arsenal in the summer for Crystal Palace, stated that he is looking ‘every week’ to see who Mikel Arteta is starting in between the sticks, as he told talkSPORT (15/10/23).
At first, it was Aaron Ramsdale donning the gloves, before David Raya was handed that role for the first time against Everton.
Since then, Arsenal’s summer loan signing from Brentford has remained as number one for the key games, with his partner in crime coming in for a League Cup match.
Prior to Rob Holding leaving for Palace, he would have seen David Raya’s qualities first-hand, with the 28-year-old impressed by what he briefly witnessed from the Spanish star.
Equally, he shared that Aaron Ramsdale is one of his ‘close’ friends, as the England international now finds himself on the bench.
Rob Holding on Ramsdale and Raya
“The whole goalkeeping situation, I have no idea which way that is going to go,” said Holding. “Each week, I am looking ‘is Rambo (Ramsdale) in’. I am close to Rambo. We were really good friends whilst we were there.
“I got a little bit of David (Raya) as he came in for a few weeks and I saw his qualities, so it’s an interesting one. I am looking every week thinking ‘who is in?’
“Whichever one plays is going to be a solid goalkeeper with a technical playing style that Arteta wants for his team.”Mikel Arteta picks his goalkeeper
It seems as though Arteta has made his call and Raya will now be his number one for the long term – Cesc Fabregas feels he got lucky during the win against Manchester City before the international break.
That probably means Ramsdale has a big call to make in January and whether or not he should leave.
As of this moment, Gareth Southgate is still picking him for England, but for how long will that continue if he keeps warming the bench?
Therefore, come January, it wouldn’t be a surprise if there is talk of Ramsdale possibly leaving.
