"Now my feeling is to get everybody engaged in the team. They have to play, regardless of the competition. We have to do it. This is my message."
Arteta's words though have not been matched by his actions. Despite his vehement protestations, it is clear that the Arsenal boss views Raya as his number one. Ramsdale has been restricted to Carabao Cup matches, and there seems to be almost nothing he can do to get his starting spot back.
With Raya failing to fully convince on several occasions now, the question has to be asked whether Arteta has made something of a rod for his own back. Ramsdale's confidence looked shot to pieces in Wednesday's Carabao Cup defeat to West Ham, and bringing him back in to replace Raya may cause more long term damage than good for both players' confidence levels at this point.
