‘Arteta really appreciates him’: Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal would happily sign £53m player in January

Arsenal may need to be active in the January transfer window if they want to win the Premier League.

Indeed, the Gunners are good enough to be contenders this season, but with the right additions this winter, they could push on to the next level.

So far, the player Arsenal have been most strongly linked with is Ivan Toney, with some journalists claiming that they expect Toney to join the Gunners this summer.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, there is in fact another player in the Premier League who is Arsenal’s top target.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano claims that the top name on Arsenal’s list right now is Douglas Luiz, claiming that those within the club think he could be the perfect midfield addition.

Luiz Arsenal’s top target
Romano shared what he knows about the Aston Villa star.

“The top name, from what I’m hearing on Arsenal’s list is Douglas Luiz. The player was already on the list two years ago. Edu and others at the club really appreciate him, Douglas Luiz is considered the perfect midfielder by people at Arsenal, they would love to sign him and return on Douglas Luiz. Only a crazy, huge, important proposal could be considered in January. If Arsenal want to go for their top target in January, they’ll need to invest a lot of money,” Romano said.

What Arsenal need
Douglas Luiz could be exactly what Arsenal need in the second-half of this season.

They’ve struggled in the midfield so far this term as the likes of Kai Havertz and Jorginho haven’t been up to the task of replacing Granit Xhaka, but Luiz would bring that tenacity, attacking intent and great technique that the Swiss midfielder used to.

Of course, getting the Brazilian out of Aston Villa won’t be easy, and Unai Emery won’t be keen to do his former side any favours, but this is certainly a situation to keep an eye on heading into the January window.
