Arsenal are one of several European heavyweights understood to be tracking the midfielder, who earned his first international call-up in two years earlier this month. Luiz has been instrumental in Aston Villa’s impressive start to the campaign.
Former Gunners boss Unai Emery - who outlined his desire to keep Luiz at the weekend - has developed the 25-year-old into one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League. Reports have suggested Arsenal are planning to sell Thomas Partey, freeing up space for a new anchor man in the engine room.
Mikel Arteta failed to sign Luiz in 2021 but former Manchester United striker Berbatov has claimed the Brazilian could be more open to leaving Villa. He told Betfair: “Douglas Luiz is a key player at Aston Villa and I’m sure he’s attracting attention from other clubs.
“If he continues to perform like the way he is doing, then yes, other teams will of course be looking at him. This is the way football works. Yes, Aston Villa are a big football club. You can stay there and hope to do something great but the moment you have a great season (and) play for Brazil, big teams will be coming after you.
“The moment that happens, your head will start to spin. You’ll start thinking about playing for big teams and how you’ll lift trophies. The moment that starts, you’ll need to make the right choice.”
Emery was quizzed on Luiz's future at the weekend. He said: “Douglas is playing very good and he improves a lot. His commitment is amazing. I am very happy with him and I want to keep him, of course.
"I think he’s happy with us, his commitment with his national team and his performances like today are amazing, fantastic. I want him.”
