'Instead of Havertz': Chairman says Arsenal would be guaranteed champions if they signed £60m player last summer

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony believes Arsenal would win the Premier League title if they had signed Ivan Toney instead of Kai Havertz in the summer.

The Gunners have started the season well and are still very much in the title race. They are just two points behind Spurs at the top of the table. MacAnthony believes Arsenal made a mistake choosing Havertz over Toney.

Arsenal would be champions if they signed Ivan Toney instead of Kai Havertz
Arsenal signed Kai Havertz from Chelsea in the summer in a £65 million deal (Sky Sports).

Plenty of people questioned Mikel Arteta back then, and they are all doing the same even to this day – over four months after the Gunners signed him.

Havertz has had a really poor season so far. He just hasn’t been able to adapt to the way Arsenal play, and that is hurting everyone around him.

Not many people will bet their house on Arsenal winning the Premier League title with Havertz in their side. Posh chairman MacAnthony certainly won’t, but he thinks the Gunners would be guaranteed champions if they had signed Ivan Toney in the summer instead of Havertz.

He said on talkSPORT: “Chelsea should’ve bought him in August and they would’ve had a readymade striker ready to go in January, who is already in with the dressing room and well in with the manager.

“It has made no difference to them. So they could’ve done it, they had the money, they should’ve bought him in August.

“Arsenal, instead of Havertz, should’ve bought him in August. Havertz isn’t going to make a difference to them winning the title. Ivan Toney guarantees them the title.”Arsenal can still sign Toney in January
There was no way Arsenal or any other club was going to sign Ivan Toney in the summer – the Englishman is banned until the start of next year.

Bringing him to the club six months early would’ve probably given him the time he needs to adapt to his new surroundings, but no club would take such a big risk, especially considering his valuation is at least £60 million (Eurosport).

The January transfer window is fast approaching now, as is Toney’s return date. Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move to sign him, and it has been claimed that he wants to become a Gunner as well.

It will be interesting to see what will happen, but MacAnthony is absolutely convinced that Arsenal will win the Premier League title if Toney leads their line.
