Martin Odegaard sends clear message to Bukayo Saka over taking Arsenal captaincy

Martin Odegaard has endorsed the "leadership" qualities of Bukayo Saka despite admitting his frustration at losing the armband last month.

The Norwegian midfielder missed the controversial defeat at Newcastle and midweek win over Sevilla with injury, but prior to that, was axed for the 5-0 win over Sheffield United. That followed a perceived drop in form from the 24-year-old, who was pivotal in Arsenal's title charge in the 2022/23 season.

In his absence, it was Saka who took the armband. And ahead of the Gunners welcoming Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, Odegaard has opened up on both Arteta's decision and his fitness issues.

"It’s been really frustrating for me to miss the last couple of games, and also that last league game here, the 5-0 win over Sheffield United," he told the club website. "Bukayo took the armband for that game, the first time he’s been Arsenal captain I think, and we can all see that he is adding leadership to his long list of qualities."

And Odegaard insisted there was no ill-will towards the England international, implying the more leaders in the dressing room were better. "I’m not surprised he’s developing like this," he added.

"I’m really happy for him, because he deserves it. I think he’s a bit like me in that he’s not the one who shouts the most, or the loudest one in the dressing room. But he’s so intelligent, he’s always available, he gives everything for the team and he’s taking more and more responsibility on and off the pitc"He really deserves to be there as one of the captains. I’m proud of him and happy to have him as a teammate because he’s a great player and also a great person."

Odegaard is expected to be fit to face Burnley, but has not started in any of the side's last four matches across three competitions and is unlikely to be risked from the start. Saka though, is expected to feature despite picking up a minor knock against Sevilla.
