Mikel Arteta says Arsenal have suffered a 'big blow' ahead of Newcastle clash tonight

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has described Emile Smith Rowe’s injury as a “big blow” ahead of Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Newcastle.

The Gunners academy graduate started in the 5-0 league win over Sheffield United last week, but then didn’t make the squad for the Carabao Cup loss to West Ham.

Speaking about Smith Rowe‘s absence in midweek, Arteta confirmed that the Arsenal player felt something in his knee and started to feel pain after the Blades game.

“We are assessing him but a bit worried with him,” the Gunners boss added, in conversation with Sky Sports, as per 90Min.

Now, ahead of Arsenal heading to Tyneside for their Saturday evening kickoff, Arteta predicted that Smith Rowe would be out for weeks.

He told the Arsenal media team: “Nothing has changed, as I said I think he will be out for weeks.

“How many will determine in relation to how he progresses in the first few weeks especially.

“It’s a big blow because he was getting some momentum and some minutes.

“And we’d started to get the Emile that we needed, but unfortunately he’s going to be out again.”

Fingers crossed Smith Rowe makes speedy recovery
It’s a real shame to hear that Smith Rowe has suffered a setback just as he had finally managed to work his way back into the starting XI.The 23-year-old has had some terrible luck of late. Last season, he was on the sidelines for months after requiring surgery to correct a groin issue.

Although Smith Rowe returned to the fold in January, he didn’t start any games and, more often than not, was an unused substitute as the Gunners challenged for the title.

This season, he has struggled for game time once again, with just 230 minutes of club football under his belt, and the Sheffield United match was his first league start.

Let’s hope he makes a quick recovery and can return to the fold as soon as possible.
