David Seaman urges Arsenal to sign Aston Villa star in January transfer window

David Seaman has urged Arsenal to make a January move for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins as competition for Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian has seen his start to the season affected by a series of injuries and has only managed to score twice in his 11 Premier League appearances.

Jesus led the line for Arsenal at the weekend as the Gunners fell to a 1-0 away defeat against Aston Villa, which saw Unai Emery’s side move within one point of their top-four rivals.

Watkins did not get on the scoresheet at the weekend but the England international has already notched up eight goals and six assists in his 16 games this season.

And Seaman believes that the 27-year-old striker should be top of Arsenal’s January transfer wishlist come the new year.

‘[Watkins] is a good shout,’ the former Arsenal keeper said, speaking on his podcast Seaman Says.

‘Yeah, because he’s a box striker. He doesn’t get too involved in the build-up play which I like.

‘I sometimes see Jesus too far out, and I’m like: ‘No, get back in the middle!’ It’s something everyone is talking about, getting a new striker would boost the team.’

Mikel Arteta was also full of praise for the Villa striker when speaking prior to their game on the weekend.

‘He’s been tremendously consistent over the last few years. He is a real threat,’ the Spaniard said. ‘Like all other strikers, don’t give him the ball in the box! That’s his main quality.’
