Gabriel Martinelli gives Arsenal vs Wolves verdict as Premier League goal set

Gabriel Martinelli admitted Arsenal “tried” to put Wolverhampton Wanderers to the sword in a more convincing fashion.

It appeared to be a routine home win after just 13 minutes when Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard gave the Gunners a 2-0 lead. Arsenal, boasting a comfortable lead, coasted for large spells and should have increased their advantage.

Pressure levels around the Emirates Stadium heightened just four minutes from time when Matheus Cunha struck for the visitors. Wolves mounted a late fightback and pushed for an equaliser - which would have been catastrophic for Arteta’s side.

A 2-1 win ultimately flattered Wolves but Arsenal fans will not care as their side cemented pole position in the Premier League. Speaking to the club’s media channel post-match, Martinelli also insisted the win is all that matters.

“In the Premier League it’s always like that,” the Brazilian said. “You need to be ready because the game can change in one action. I don’t think they were creating a lot of chances but, as I said in one action, the game can change but I think we deserved the win.

“We did well and the most important thing is the three points, so we got it. We tried our best, we kept going, we didn’t start to play like it was already won. As I said, we tried our best to score another goal, but we didn’t score. But the most important thing is three points.

“Every game is important. We know we are top of the Premier League now. We want to be there; we want to be top of the Premier League for the rest of the season. We’ll try our best.”
