With his versatility and natural defensive instincts, Tomiyasu offers Mikel Arteta a useful squad presence, even if he doesn't receive the acclaim of some of his teammates. As such, his performances had recently caught the eye of Bayern Munich, while his contract at Arsenal is running down.
It has left the Gunners contemplating their next move when it comes to a possible extension of his contract, with other players already signing new terms in recent months. He continued to show his worth on and off the pitch though, before injury concerns struck again.
Tomiyasu has had a history of calf muscle issues that have left him out of action for a few weeks, but his recent injury against Wolves left plenty to be concerned about. Speaking on the issue, Arteta told the press: "We had a scan and it’s not good news. He’s got an injury in his calf and he’s going to be out for a while I think."
The defender is now expected to be out of action until the new year, with an estimate placed between January and February for a return. Should he make a recovery, there's every chance he may not be with the squad anyway, due to Japan's participation in the AFC Asian Cup in mid-January.
However, unlike his past injuries, it could be a tougher battle to fight back from as injury expert Ben Dinnery explained on a recent appearance on Premier FPL injuries. He said: "It is [the same type of calf issue Tomiyasu has faced before], yes. Not exactly the same but we know they're all calf related problems, which is a slight concern, it is a little bit more serious than first thought.
"Initial reports suggest that it may have just been a precautionary measure, but unfortunately scan results came back showing that there's damage to that muscle. So that's going to keep him out for a few weeks. But Ben White, he's back, he's had his own injury problems but he's ok now, he's been cleared so as long as Ben White stays fit then things should remain fine."
