The CJEU's report did state that the formation of the league should 'not necessarily be approved'. However, that has not stopped A22 Sports' revealing a new proposal for a 64-team competition, split into three divisions, which will not include any permanent members.
The revised format for the competition would see 64 men’s and 32 women’s teams playing midweek in a league system across Europe, with set criteria around the formation of the league confirming that clubs would be chosen 'based on sporting merit'. There would be no permanent members and that any participating club would stay in their domestic league rather than having to breakaway to join the Super League.
However, the UK government are progressing in their efforts to pass a new law that would ultimately make it illegal for any English club to join a breakaway league - such as the European Super League. Now, United have a released the following club statement: "Manchester United has issued the following statement in reaction to today's judgement by the European Court of Justice on the European Super League: Our position has not changed.
"We remain fully committed to participation in UEFA competitions, and to positive cooperation with UEFA, the Premier League, and fellow clubs through the ECA on the continued development of the European game," the club added. There is yet to be any communication from any of the other five teams - including Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea - that attempted to join the initial Super League proposal which received a huge backlash from supporters across the UK.
Barcelona and Real Madrid, however, have released statements supporting the CJEU's decision and remain in favour of the newly proposed Super League. Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez, released an 'institutional statement' in which he also expressed 'great satisfaction' following the CJEU's decision.
In his statement, Perez said: "This day will mark a before and after. It is a great day for the history of football and for the history of sport.
"European club football is not and will not be a monopoly and the clubs are the owners of their destiny. From Real Madrid we welcome with great satisfaction the decision of the CJEU," he added.
Speaking back in May 2022, Perez said: "UEFA is a monopoly. Their threats? We are not scared of them. We have to remind UEFA who Real Madrid is."
