Of course, City will be desperate to be the first to do so, although they have struggled to keep up with the pack so far this term. Liverpool currently lead the race, sitting on 42 points from their first 19 outings whilst Arsenal are second, having accrued 40 points from 18 fixtures.
Meanwhile, Guardiola's side find themselves down in fifth, eight points behind the league leaders, albeit having only played 17 times so far this term. “This is the business,” Guardiola said, via The Times.
“When you don’t win you are nothing, zero. As much as you win they want you to fail more than ever. I’ve felt that since day one in Barcelona, that people are waiting. But what we have won, the titles, is unbelievable.”
But Guardiola has sent out a warning, urging his doubters to reconsider. “The people say, ‘How good they play, the methodology, how genius it is,’ but it’s because I win,” he added.
“They don’t understand anything that we do, but they give credit just because we win. You have to look further than that. In the moment you don’t win there are going to be doubts, but that’s what’s nice. Doubt again. We’ll see what happens.
“When we played incredibly well against Crystal Palace, Liverpool and Tottenham and we don’t win, it’s the real proof that they don’t care about the way we play. We played quite similar to the best levels we have played these past eight years. But we don’t win so it’s a crisis, a disaster.
“Of course you have bad moments like Aston Villa. Aston Villa were better and you have to accept it and move forward. Now we are very happy, but they are waiting around the corner. The criticism is part of the job. You have to accept that the people can criticise you but it’s just because you don’t win. So, try to win the next game.”
