TRANSFER GOSSIP:Arsenal given major Douglas Luiz transfer update amid January priority claim

Arsenal have been handed an update on the future of Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz ahead of the January transfer window. The Brazilian midfielder has been linked with a switch to the Gunners over the past 18 months after three failed bids arrived from Emirates Stadium last summer.

"Douglas is playing very good," he admitted after the 2-1 win against Spurs. "His commitment [is] amazing. I want to keep him and he is happy with us." Despite this, the Gunners could look to tempt him with a transfer as they search to sign a new midfielder after the injury blow suffered by Thomas Partey.

Further issues at the back however, with Takehiro Tomiyasu now absent, has seen their January transfer window priority change to acquiring a defender. Nonetheless, there is still interest in Luiz, however the Athletic's David Ornstein has clarified Arsenal's stance on the 25-year-old.

"There is always speculation around Douglas Luiz and he signed a new contract last January when Arsenal tried to sign him. It’s been described to me as no chance that Arsenal will get him this January and people I speak to of an Arsenal persuasion dispute that they’re going to go for him or that he’s the profile that everyone inside the club wants,” Ornstein said on The Athletic Football Podcast.

Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad is also of interest to Arsenal while Gabriel Moscardo is another name to have been linked with an Emirates Stadium switch. However, it is far more likely that a defender joins during the winter trading period with Sporting CP star Ousmane Diomande and Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi as two options for Arteta and Edu.
