'What I'm told': Fabrizio Romano shares what he's heard about Ivan Toney potentially joining Arsenal on loan

Fabrizio Romano has delivered his verdict on rumours claiming Arsenal could sign Ivan Toney on loan in the January transfer window.

The Gunners are on top of the Premier League table right now. Mikel Arteta is exactly where he wants to be, but many feel a new striker in January will make them the favourites to win the title. Toney has been heavily linked.

Fabrizio Romano addresses Ivan Toney to Arsenal loan deal links
Rumours on social media over the last few days have been claiming that Arsenal could sign Ivan Toney from Brentford on loan until the end of this campaign.

The Englishman was one of the best strikers in the Premier League last season. Only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane fared better than the Brentford man, and everyone expected him to be on the move in the summer.

However, Toney was handed a ban for breaching betting rules and hasn’t played a competitive game for the Bees in months. He will only be allowed back in the middle of January.

That’s when many think he will be on the move, but Romano has all but ruled out a loan transfer to Arsenal. He has claimed that if Toney is to leave Brentford, it will be for big money.

He said on Kick: “I would keep the name of Ivan Toney for Arsenal. I saw some reports in recent days – Toney on loan to Arsenal.

“Guys, what I’m told is Brentford want important money, only an important proposal can change the story for Ivan Toney. So, I don’t see an easy deal or a loan deal or these kind of things. It has to be an important bid and important negotiation for Ivan Toney.

“What I’m hearing is Arsenal appreciate the player. Chelsea appreciate the player but they’ve not started any negotiation. Chelsea are not working for Toney at this moment. He’s not a priority target for Chelsea.

“What I’m also hearing – this is more on the player’s side and player’s camp – Ivan Toney would be really, really keen on joining Arsenal. He really likes Arsenal’s project, Arsenal as a club, Arsenal as an environment.

“So, Arsenal would be a really tempting option for Ivan Toney, who could be really keen on that one.”

Arsenal can’t sign Toney on loan
Even if Brentford are willing to let Ivan Toney leave on loan, Arsenal cannot sign him, as things stand.

Premier League rules prohibit the signing of more than one player on loan from the same club in a season. The Gunners have already brought in David Raya from Thomas Frank’s side, so signing another player on loan from Brentford is not allowed.

The one way Arsenal can get Toney on loan is if they sign Raya on a permanent deal next month. That will lift the loan limitations and would make things easier.

However, Brentford are unlikely to even consider letting Toney go if they don’t receive a big bid for a permanent transfer.
