'Yes': £86m striker has just made a promise about January after claims Arsenal want to sign him

Arsenal target Viktor Gyokeres has just made a promise that he will not leave Sporting Lisbon in the January transfer window.

The Gunners are expected to sign at least one player next month. Many feel a new striker would boost their chances of winning the Premier League title, and Gyokeres has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates.

Viktor Gyokeres promises to stay at Sporting Lisbon amid Arsenal links
Arsenal target Viktor Gyokeres has been a revelation in the Portuguese top flight since joining Sporting Lisbon in the summer.

The Swede has scored 17 goals and provided eight assists in just 20 appearances this season. He is one of the best players in Portugal right now, and it’s no surprise that he is a wanted man.

Arsenal have been linked with a move to sign Gyokeres, while Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea are also said to be interested in the 25-year-old striker.

Sporting boss Ruben Amorim made it clear recently that the only way Gyokeres will leave is if a club triggers his €100 million (£86m) release clause.

The striker has now had his say on the rumours, and he has dismissed any possibility of leaving Sporting in the January transfer window.

When asked about interest from Arsenal, Chelsea and others, Gyokeres told Record: “I think it’s a bit like when Sporting came in to sign me… I’m very happy here and I don’t care about any interested parties at the moment.

“I’m enjoying every day here and not thinking about what’s going on around me. Yes, there’s talk of big clubs, but for now, it’s just news. That’s all.”

Gyokeres was then asked if he could promise that he won’t leave in January. The striker replied: “Yes. This is where I want to stay.”

Arsenal signing Gyokeres in January was always unlikely
Rumours that Arsenal are interested in Viktor Gyokeres were never hard to believe – the Swede is having a terrific season and his numbers are up there with the best forwards in Europe.

However, a move in January was always unlikely.

Arsenal spent an absolute fortune in the summer on Kai Havertz, Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber. That cost them more than £200 million.

Spending £86 million on Gyokeres just six months later was always unrealistic, and now that the player himself has vowed not to leave in January, Arsenal fans should stop dreaming.
