Arsenal unleash new South American scout as Edu looks to £12.8m reinforcement

Arsenal have been linked with a move for Boca Juniors midfielder Ezequiel Fernandez. According to El Crack Deportivo, Arsenal have scouted the Argentinian who is valued at around €15million (£12.8million).

football.london understands he Gunners have been stepping up their work in South America and since the vote of Brexit, like many other Premier League clubs, have seen the region as an opportunity to find some gems. Manchester City have seen great success with Julian Alvarez and Arsenal themselves have already enjoyed the fruits of the investment in Ituano starlet Gabriel Martinelli.

It has not been completely successful as Marquinhos returned to Arsenal from an unsuccessful second spell on loan having joined Nantes following a timid time with Norwich City. football.london understands all options are open to the winger who is now with Brazil’s Under-23s for the Pre-Olympic Tournament.

Vinicius Jr is another name to excite fans after arriving at Los Blancos in 2018 alongside Flamengo’s Rodrygo. Both Brazilians have gone on to become huge successes in Madrid and Endrick will look to follow in their footsteps.

These links to Fernandez perhaps could link to the early work of Xavier at Arsenal. With finances tight due to the restrictions in place from Profit and Sustainability Regulations, the South American sides can often harbour talent at a cheaper price than those found on the continent.

The South American contingent at the Gunners already includes the likes of Martinelli, Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Jesus. However, they have not had an Argentinian in the ranks since Emi Martinez, who left for Aston Villa in 2020.

The timing of the potential arrival of 21-year-old Fernandez or a similar profile makes sense. Mohamed Elneny and Jorginho see both their contracts run out in the summer and there are even suggestions Thomas Partey could be sold following a further spate of injury concerns.
Even whilst they are interested in a marquee addition like Martin Zubimendi or Douglas Luiz, a younger option to add depth would also be of great benefit to the club. For the meagre fee mentioned above it would be in the club's parameters to make a deal happen, although a January move appears to come too soon.
