Borja Mayoral responds to Arsenal transfer interest as Mason Greenwood's Getafe team-mate…

WHAT HAPPENED?
Mikel Arteta is looking to reinvigorate a misfiring forward line that have failed to score from their last 48 shots at the Emirates. Mayoral, for his part, has been on fire for Getafe as they target an outside shot at the European places. The Real Madrid academy graduate has netted 12 times in 19 league appearances, but even he admitted his shock at that form seeing him linked with the Gunners.

WHAT MAYORAL SAID
On those Arsenal rumours, the Spaniard told Mediaset (via Estadio Deportivo): "It’s news that has surprised me too. I haven’t spoken to the club or my agent. I’m very focused on Getafe on a day-to-day basis."

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Mayoral pouring cold water on those links will mean more bad news for Arteta. The Gunners boss was recently dealt a blow in his pursuit of Ivan Toney, with any move for the Brentford talisman likely delayed until the summer. With Gabriel Jesus, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli posting a combined eight league goals so far this term, the Spaniard will now have to look elsewhere if he wants a quick fix. The Gunners were recently linked with Bologna starlet Joshua Zirkzee, who is rated at £50 million ($64m).

DID YOU KNOW?
Arsenal's top scorer in the league this campaign remains Bukayo Saka with six goals in 19 matches. Eddie Nketiah (five) comes next, with Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard (four apiece) placing joint-third in the rankings.

WHAT NEXT FOR ARSENAL?
A brief break in play will allow Arteta to assess his options and his players earn a much-needed rest. His side return to Premier League action on January 20, when they will try and overcome their Emirates hoodoo against Crystal Palace.
