Exclusive: Arsenal turn attention to signing red-hot striker as price drops by £23m

Sources: Arsenal turn attention to signing Mayoral as price drops by £23m
Arsenal are working on a late-window deal to sign Getafe striker Borja Mayoral, sources have told Football Insider.

As revealed on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the well-connected former Tottenham, Aston Villa and Everton scout Bryan King explained that Mikel Arteta wanted to sign the 26-year-old forward in the summer and has now reignited his interest with a release clause now active in the player’s contract.

It is understood that Mayoral’s release clause is worth £17million (€20million) – less than half of Getafe’s £40million asking price in the summer.

It is believed that Mikel Arteta closely pursued Majoral last summer and Arsenal had a bid for the player rejected.

Arsenal are eager to bolster their striker department in January after failing to match their approach play in recent months with a clinical edge in front of goal.

The Gunners have scored just five goals scored in their last seven matches and Jesus has netted just three times in the league for the north London side this season.

In contrast, Mayoral has been in fine form for Getafe in 2023-24, scoring 14 times and assisting once in 22 appearances.

The Spaniard started his career at the academy of Real Madrid and graduated to their first team in 2015.

During his seven years at Madrid, Mayoral scored seven goals in 33 appearances across all competitions.

He also experienced successful loan spells at Wolfsburg, Levante and Roma before joining Getafe on loan in January 2022.

After successfully steering Getafe away from relegation during his loan stint, Mayoral made the move permanent in August 2022 by signing a five-year contract.
