Premier League title challengers Arsenal are keen to add a new left-back to their ranks this month, sources have told Football Insider.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has identified the left side of his rearguard as a weak area of the squad and wants to address the problem in the mid-season window.
A well-placed source has told Football Insider that the club are monitoring several overseas targets and it is now a priority for Arteta before the 1st February deadline.
Their pursuit of a new left-back comes despite the signings of Oleksandr Zinchenko, Jakub Kiwior, Nuno Tavares and Takehiro Tomiyasu in recent seasons.
Injuries to Zinchenko in the 2023-24 campaign have meant that Arsenal have been unable to field a settled starting eleven.
The Ukraine international cost a reported £32million when he joined from Man City in July 2022.
But he has managed just 18 starts across all competitions this season, notching one goal and one assist.
Kiwior started in the Gunners’ last game against Fulham last week (31 December), but was run ragged by the Cottagers and withdrawn at the interval.
Arsenal also have left-back duo Tavares and Kieran Tierney out on loan at Nottingham Forest and Real Sociedad respectively.
Like Zinchenko, Tomiyasu has struggled with injuries this term but he returned from a calf problem to face Fulham last week.
Arteta’s side are chasing the Premier League title once again after falling short to Man City in the 2022-23 campaign.
The Gunners sit fourth in the top-flight table, five points behind leaders Liverpool after 20 games.
