Not only are there doubts about Mayoral’s ability to improve Arsenal in the here and now, a move could also complicate plans for the summer.
With Jesus, Nketiah and Mayoral on their books, Arsenal wouldn’t be able to go for a star name, as many think they currently plan to do.
Even if Arsenal were to offload a player like Nketiah, there would still be little justification to add a third striker in quick succession.
Pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor wasn’t against a short term option like Mayoral, but there’s just not enough upside considering the ramifications of any deal.
If Arsenal were to make a knee-jerk reaction towards their goal-scoring problems in January, it would have to be for an opportunity too good to turn down.
And respectfully, Mayoral doesn’t currently look to be that level of player.
That being said, if Arsenal do raise some funds this month then one signing may be more important than a striker altogether.
After a run of poor defeats, many Arsenal fans are now desperate for the signing of a prolific striker in the January transfer window.
Neither Gabriel Jesus or Eddie Nketiah have proven themselves as consistent goalscorers, and in truth, Kai Havertz is still adapting to the club.
Arsenal don’t have a Erling Haaland or a Mohamed Salah, and it’s costing them whilst in pursuit of Manchester City and Liverpool.
Naturally, fans would like their side to add a Ivan Toney or a Victor Osimhen this month, a player who is ruthless in front of goal.
However, with Arteta and Edu Gaspar said to be working under tight FFP restrictions, it simply doesn’t seem possible.
That being said, it’s now rumoured that Arsenal have made a £22m bid for Getafe’s Borja Mayoral, a cheaper alternative to the names mentioned above.
And whilst some will be happy to see any striker arrive in January, that could be a signing that really hinders Arsenal in the long run.
First of all, it’s very debatable if Mayoral is an upgrade on either Jesus or Nketiah.
The 26-year-old has an impressive 12 goals in 19 games in La Liga this season, but there’s little to suggest he’s on his way to becoming one of Europe’s elite.
And that’s exactly who Arsenal should be targeting, one of the elite.
Moreover, if it means waiting until the summer, so be it.
