'Massive signing' - Arsenal tipped for shock late transfer window raid for Newcastle United star

One former striker believes Arsenal should chase a deal for one of Newcastle United's most eye-catching stars. The Gunners are in need of a striker having struggled to take chances this season, falling behind in the title race as a consequence.

Mikel Arteta's men are currently five points off the pace at the top, and they could do with having more competition for Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah. The problem is their Financial Fair Play situation, with the Gunners having spent more than £200million in the summer window.

Though, looking to the long term, former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie believes the Gunners should look no further than Newcastle star Alexander Isak. “I think he would be excellent at Arsenal,” he told Football Insider. “He’s energetic, he’s quick and a great player.

“Now will decide how good a manager Mikel Arteta is because a lot of things are going belly-up. They’re not winning games they should be and people are finding them out – they need a striker.

“But I think Arsenal will come through it and Arteta is a big manager. Every good manager goes through these things. The fact that Arteta has played at the top level will attract big players like Isak. Isak would be a massive signing at Arsenal, but I’m not sure they’d want to sell one of their best players to a rival.”

While Isak would be a fine signing for Arsenal, given his clear goalscoring ability, Newcastle are not likely to sell for any less than £100million having only signed him for £70million in 2022, and that's if they sell at all. Though, as McAvennie says, with Newcastle not looking likely to reach the Champions League this season, there may be competitive factors at play further down the line.
