Mayoral speaks for first time about Arsenal transfer interest

Borja Mayoral has spoken for the first time about reported interest from Arsenal.

The Getafe striker has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium, either during the Janury transfer window or in the summer, having scored 14 goals in 22 games in all competitions during the first half of the season.

Mikel Arteta wants to bring in fresh firepower to help his ailing front line, who are struggling to score and were unable to prevent the club from losing three on the spin in the Premier League at the end of 2023.

Arsenal have seen their title chances handed a huge blow, having topped the table on Christmas Day but just two weeks later find themselves in fourth. A £22million bid for Mayoral has reportedly been lodged and then rejected by the Liga side.

Arteta's dream striker signing is understood to be Ivan Toney, but the 27-year-old has ruled out a January exit to help steer Brentford clear of relegation danger having only just returned from an eight-month ban for breaching betting rules.

That has prompted links with Mayoral, but the former Real Madrid striker insists he is unaware of any interest from the Gunners.

He told reporters: "I have not spoken with the club or with my representative [about Arsenal] ... I am very focused on Getafe, on a day-to-day basis."
