‘Pedigree from Chelsea’: Ian Wright suggests Arsenal sign £19m star instead of Ivan Toney

Talk of Arsenal needing a striker in January has just gone up a few notches after Mikel Arteta’s side suffered back-to-back Premier League defeats.

The name of Ivan Toney keeps getting thrown about, with the Brentford striker set to return from his long-term ban on January 16.

But Ian Wright was keen to throw in the name of Bournemouth’s in-form striker Dominic Solanke, once on the books of Chelsea, as a possible player who could come in for Arsenal, as he told Premier League Productions (01/01/24 at 2:15 pm).

The 26-year-old is hitting the form of his life. He has 12 goals from 19 Premier League games for an ever-growing Bournemouth team.

Ian Wright thinks Dominic Solanke is a ‘proper modern centre-forward’ after the Chelsea academy product was ‘ridiculed’ for his lack of goals when he first joined for £19 million in 2019.

You could argue that it’s probably easier signing a player like Dominic Solanke than it is Ivan Toney because Brentford now find themselves in a Premier League relegation battle.

Either way, Arsenal have a big call to make this month, with Ian Wright sharing his thoughts.

“His rise in the Premier League coming from Brentford and scoring goals, all the way to get here,” said Wright about Toney.

“Of course, the link is something which is good for him. I don’t think he’s somebody that if you look at the goals output that he isn’t going to do something at Arsenal, maybe he will. Look at the way he plays for Brentford and the way Arsenal try to play now. Then I am thinking, ‘yeah, I could see him in there’.

“But then you could also see a Dominic Solanke in the way he plays. Somebody who has got some pedigree from Chelsea from playing at a young age. Played at Liverpool. Learning his trade. Getting ridiculed for the lack of goals.

“Look at him now, he is a proper modern centre-forward in everything he does – he is another person they are going to be linked to and probably in and around.”

Arsenal’s January transfer window
Forget about a striker, whatever calls Arsenal make this month, it could define the rest of their season.

Last January, they didn’t get the main targets that they wanted. But Leandro Trossard and Jorginho still walked through the doors.

Despite their efforts, it wasn’t enough and Arsenal failed to get over the Premier League title line.

So, the powers that be know exactly how important this month is because it didn’t go the way they wanted last time out.
