While questions over their finances may keep them from investing heavily, the window could still bring up some opportunities to sign some players. One of those may be Everton midfielder Amadou Onana as football.london understands that the Gunners have been exploring the chance of landing the Belgian international.
The Toffees expect a fee in the region of £50million, though given their perilous financial situation, it could end up coming in at lower than that. That would require some clever finances on Arsenal's behalf though, whether that comes down to potential sales or another deal structure.
Nonetheless, the possibility of landing Onana has stirred up the fanbase, with the chance to add yet another option to the squad mix. The 22-year-old plays a more holding midfield role for his club, which has brought about questions as to where he would fit into the current team.
Declan Rice has often occupied that slightly deeper position, with Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz often joining him in a more advanced space. That's not to say there isn't room for Onana to fit in for his preferred position, given it is something that Arteta has tinkered with before.
On occasion this season, the manager has decided to play Rice slightly further forward, with Jorginho joining him in a midfield pairing. That may be a glimpse at the type of role dynamic Onana could be part of, should he make the switch south towards the English capital.
However, there may be some issues when it comes to picking out a dream squad number for the midfielder upon his arrival. Onana currently has the No.8 at Everton, but that is occupied by club captain Odegaard, and it would be a surprise if he relinquished that.
He has previously worn the 4 and 24 shirts, however both are taken by Ben White and Reiss Nelson respectively. In fact, only one number he has worn in his career is currently available: the No.16 shirt, with all the others taken up by current and loaned out members of the squad.
