'Shot down from every angle': Arsenal are denying they have any interest in signing £22m player - journalist

Arsenal are reportedly denying that they have any interest in signing Getafe striker Borja Mayoral this month.

The 26-year-old attacker is the latest forward to be linked with a move to north London, with Arsenal in the market to sign a new leading man for the second half of the season.

With a reported release clause worth £22m, Mayoral could be viewed by many as an affordable option for Arsenal, but the reality is much more complicated than that.

According to journalist Dean Jones via GiveMeSport, the Gunners simply don’t have the funds to sign the former Real Madrid striker, unless a major sale was to be made in the coming weeks.

Jones said: “The links to Mayoral are being shot down from every angle, and that’s not a major surprise to me because even at £22m, I think he might be out of reach as things stand.

“There seems to be a struggle for people to fully grasp that Arsenal don’t have the resources to make bids for players like this, but it is the case. I’m not ruling out the idea of any business this month, but they have very little wiggle room financially, and there is no negotiation around signing Mayoral.”

Arsenal’s interest in Mayoral has come as a surprise to many fans this January, with the Getafe forward an unexpected option for the north London side.

Whilst 14 goals in all competitions is an impressive tally, Arsenal are fully aware that the striker they sign should be somebody who Mikel Arteta knows is going to take his side to the next level.

And whilst Arsenal need a striker, it wouldn’t make sense for the north London side to move for a player like Mayoral just for the sake of needing a new leading man in the attack.

As a result, the Gunners might be better off biding their time for a new forward when funds are available and when the ideal player is available, something that could happen in the summer.
