'Wow’: Rio Ferdinand reacts to suggestion £158k-a-week Arsenal man could go to Manchester City

Rio Ferdinand has spoken about the possibility of Mikel Arteta swapping the Arsenal dugout for Manchester City’s.

Last season, Pep Guardiola produced one of the greatest seasons in English football history when Manchester City became just the second team to win the Treble.

That was the high of highs for the former Barcelona man and now Rio Ferdinand thinks he could be out of the door in ’18 months’, as he told Vibe with Five.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was Pep Guardiola’s right-hand man for many years and is now making a name for himself at the Emirates.

He is yet to win the Premier League title, with only the FA Cup to his name, and you would assume if he gets over that line then it will elevate him forever.

But that cloud is still above Mikel Arteta’s head, with Rio Ferdinand questioning if Arsenal fans would be happy to see their manager leave if, in 18 months, he still hasn’t won anything.

Next Manchester City manager?
On being told that Arteta could return to Man City as manager: “Wow,” responded Ferdinand.

“I think Pep could be gone in 18 months.

“If he (Arteta) left and went to Man City, in that time, and hadn’t won anything. Would you (speaking to an Arsenal fan) be happy for him to go? Or would you be sitting there ‘Oh my God, Arteta has been taken. He has been nicked’.”

Mikel Arteta’s first job
Sometimes many forget that this gig is Arteta’s first-ever as a manager. Yes, he got a taste of what it’s like at the Etihad, but nothing prepares you for being the main man.

You could argue that, this season, small pockets of noises could be heard, as some question if their £158k-a-week manager has the minerals to win the title.

If he doesn’t get over that line this season, then the reaction at the end of the campaign is going to be very, very interesting.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if certain sections of the fanbase call for Arteta’s head because he has made some huge calls this season, from David Raya to Kai Havertz, that many are still to see the fruits of.
