Arsenal could be handed a surprise Premier League title boost over Liverpool and Manchester City in the coming days. The Gunners bounced back from defeat in the Champions League by securing their sixth consecutive victory in league action this past weekend with a dominant win against Newcastle.
Both Man City and Liverpool had played their scheduled fixtures earlier than Arsenal with the latter coming from behind to beat Luton on Wednesday evening. Pep Guardiola's side then beat Bournemouth just a few hours before Arsenal's 4-1 triumph over Newcastle at Emirates Stadium.
Liverpool's clash against Luton was played a number of days earlier as they were in Carabao Cup final action against Chelsea. A late winner from Virgil van Dijk in extra time saw the Reds win the first domestic trophy of the season and Jurgen Klopp will certainly be eyeing more in his final season at Anfield.
In just a few days, Liverpool take on Southampton in the FA Cup fifth round with a spot in the quarter-finals up for grabs. Arsenal were knocked out of the competition in the third round by Klopp's side, but got their revenge a few weeks later by beating them in the league. The day before that, Man City head to Kenilworth Road for a cup tie against Luton Town.
Not only does that give Arsenal an extra few days of rest over their rivals, but it could also benefit Mikel Arteta's side in the long-term when it comes to the final few weeks of the title race. If both Liverpool and Man City win, which is likely, their games on the weekend of Saturday, March 16 will be rearranged with an FA Cup clash to be contested in place of that league fixture.
As both clubs are still in European competition, Liverpool's game against Everton and Man City's clash with Brighton will have to be played in the final few weeks of the campaign. That could give the Gunners a major boost with their two title rivals forced to play an extra league fixture in the middle of an already hectic schedule.
However, Arsenal could find
However, Arsenal could find themselves in a similar position, despite no longer being in the FA Cup. That is because their opponents for that scheduled weekend are Chelsea and they can make it into the next round with a victory against Leeds United.
With that, even if Man City lose to Luton, they could still be without a league game in the middle of March as Brighton are also still in the FA Cup and will make the last eight if they beat Wolves on Wednesday. It is far less likely though that Arsenal do not play when compared to Liverpool and Man City, however there is a chance they end up having the exact same schedule as their two title rivals.
