'Waste of money': Alan Brazil says £27m Arsenal player was a really poor signing

David Raya is the subject of plenty of criticism in the wake of Arsenal’s loss to Porto on Wednesday.
The Spaniard didn’t do all that much wrong during the game, but in the last minute he was beaten by a Galeno long-shot that he perhaps should’ve done better with.

Indeed, this looping effort went right over Raya’s head, and many are questioning his positioning and ability.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Alan Brazil has been discussing Raya and his Arsenal career so far, and he gave a damning verdict on the £27m man.

Brazil says that he doesn’t think Raya should be Arsenal’s starting goalkeeper right now, and he even went as far as to say that he thinks the Spaniard was a waste of money.

David Raya was a waste of money
Brazil shared his verdict on the goalkeeper.

“I’m sorry, listen, I hate picking on players and I still don’t think he should be in goal, in my own personal opinion. I think it was a waste of money,” Brazil said.

Harsh, but understandable
This is a very harsh verdict from Brazil, but in a lot of ways he’s right.

Raya isn’t necessarily a waste of money at £27m, but he was an unnecessary signing perhaps.

Aaron Ramsdale barely put a foot wrong last season, and the idea that Arsenal needed to go and sign a player like Raya as a so-called upgrade seemed strange at the time and still seems quite strange now.

Raya is going to come under that increased scrutiny due to the fact Ramsdale is such a popular player and did so well last season, and while this game against Porto wasn’t a disaster for Raya, the nitpicking of his performance just goes to show how he is viewed in the wider footballing world right now.

There are questions to be asked around Arsenal’s decision to sign Raya, that’s for sure.
