The Gunners need a centre-forward who knows how to score goals at Henry’s sort of rate, and, unfortunately, they were unable to secure that kind of player in the January transfer window.
Arsenal were linked with a number of strikers last month, and one of those was Ollie Watkins.
The England international is flying at Aston Villa right now, and speaking on the Football’s Greatest Podcast, Paul Merson has given Watkins some unique praise.
Merson was discussing Thierry Henry’s style of play when he was at Arsenal, and he says that his movement was very reminiscent of what Ollie Watkins has been doing in recent years.

Watkins moves like Henry
Merson shared his verdict on the £28m man.
“His pace, he’s the only player I know who could run around the outside of players and get inside. He made people look average, which is some doing. He was a winger, then Wenger put this man up front, the rest is history. He was the first one who played as a centre-forward and came from out to in, you see it with Ollie Watkins doing it now, that’s what he would do, Thierry Henry,” Merson said.
Perfect for Arsenal
Arsenal need a striker in this mould, and it has to be said that Watkins would be perfect.
MORE ARSENAL STORIES
A fantastic finisher, a hard worker, a skilful player and a fantastic link-up player, Watkins is everything Arsenal need right now.
Unfortunately, with Villa flying so high and Watkins recently signing a new deal, getting this transfer done in the summer will prove to be incredibly difficult.
Watkins would be perfect for Arsenal, but we can’t imagine that this door will be open come the summer considering Villa’s current position.
